Torino:

1961-1962

A Year in Italy

Denis Law’s single season at Torino, in Italy, was packed with more action than many players experience in an entire career.

A Fuoriclasse

Denis quickly made his mark by scoring four goals in his first six games, including a victory over fierce rivals Juventus. The Italian fans were thrilled, hailing Denis as a fuoriclasse (a superstar).

At Torino, he played alongside Joe Baker, another British player adapting to Italian football. Their friendship was strengthened by their shared experiences in a foreign league, and they remained close friends thereafter.

Challenges and Triumphs

But life in the Italian league was not all plain sailing. Denis faced tough, defensive tactics and off-the-field challenges. Despite all this, Denis’ speed and technical brilliance made him a fan favourite, and to this day, he is remembered as one of the best foreign players to have worn Torino’s famous deep red shirt.

  • Denis netted 7 goals in his first 9 matches, including scoring on his home debut against Vicenza, propelling Torino to second place in the league early in the season.

His tally of 10 goals in 27 league appearances made him the club's top scorer that season and won him the title of Serie A's Best Foreign Player.

  • Legendary football agent, Gigi Peronace, once said…

“He cost around £100,000, big money for a British player in those days. The speed and technical brilliance of Law reminded the supporters of their former hero, Valentino Mazzola. “

“They had never seen anyone quite as quick-thinking as Denis. He was always two or three moves ahead. It was a pity he only stayed a year.”
