1958 - 1974

A Scotland Legend

Aged 18, Denis was called up to represent Scotland by caretaker manager Matt Busby.

A Memorable Debut

During the 1958 British Home Championships, Denis immediately lived up to his reputation, scoring the 2nd goal in a 3-0 victory over Wales. It was the first of many proud moments in his 55-cap Scotland career.

Victory over the World Champions

One of his greatest achievements came in 1967 when he helped lead Scotland to a stunning 3–2 victory over England – the reigning World Cup winners – at Wembley. Denis opened the scoring and roamed the pitch, creating chaos and making it impossible for England to contain him. In the eyes of Scottish fans, the result earned Scotland the title of “Unofficial World Champions”.

Record Scorer

Denis went on to score 30 goals for Scotland, a record he still shares today as joint top scorer, alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish. His remarkable contribution to the Scotland National Team remains legendary, inspiring generations of Scottish footballers and fans.

  • Although not a Scotland game, Denis was extremely proud to be selected with players he admired, as part of a ‘Rest of the World’ team that faced England in the FA Centenary match in 1963.

It was the first time a world team had played a single nation. Denis scored the only goal for the Rest of the World as England ran out 2-1 winners.

It was a career highlight for him at the age of 23.

Leap to Enormous Heights

Denis was famous for his powerful headers, often leaping higher than defenders to meet the ball. He had a special ability to “hang in the air”. This was not just raw talent – it was the result of his creative kitchen-based training.

Test your ability and see if you can reach the heights of The King.
