Community Festival kicks off in style with biggest ever Sport di Strada tournament

Aberdeen’s community festival kicked off in style on Friday with the return of Streetsport’s annual community tournament.

The Sport di Strada, named in honour of Denis Law’s period of playing in Italy, brings together young people from around the city where Denis Law Legacy Trust operates in to compete against each other.

It marked the opening of the 2022 Denis Law Legacy Trust Community Festival, a nine-day event at Aberdeen Sports Village offering entirely free family sport and activities.

Speaking to STV News about the festival, Streetsport Development Manager Hannah Clews said this year was “all about getting families out doing stuff together”.

“The climate at the moment is harder for families to have that disposable income so hopefully by making all the activities free, which is consistent across the charity’s programme, it’s easier to attend”.

For the first time there were two age categories in the Sport di Strada with a new shield representing the 12-14 youngsters and the existing trophy being lifted by the 15-18 age group.

12 teams and over 80 young people were represented in two leagues which amounted to Northfield being victorious in both categories against their Torry counterparts.

All of the games were played in high spirits, both friendly and competitive, with many close games including a penalty shoot-out to decide the Sport di Strada Shield plus a 4-1 victory to claim the Sport di Strada Trophy.

The awards were handed out by Aberdeen FC’s greatest ever player, Willie Miller, alongside the club’s next rising star, Connor Barron.

Co-Op Aberdeen supplied refreshments for the event with fresh fruit and water while Central Coaches provided free transport for all the teams.

The support from key partners such as Co-Op and Central Coaches are an integral part of the Trust’s model of supplying free activity for Aberdeen’s youngsters. It’s hugely appreciated and we’re very thankful for their support. Thanks also to Aberdeen Sports Village for their partnership and to Euan Duff for his images.
