New Streetsport partnership with local Muay Thai group hits the spot

A new Streetsport session which is run in partnership with a mixed martial arts gym in Torry is proving to be a great success for local youngsters.

The session, which started in the latter period of 2019, was introduced to offer particular young Streetsport participants a sporting opportunity that usually wouldn’t be available to them.

Free of charge thanks to Aberdeen Muay Thai, the sessions allowed participants to try MMA, something which many youngsters may be intrigued to but unavailable to do so due to costs or a lack of facilities.

MMA is increasingly well known and has many benefits such as improving fitness, discipline and social interaction. These are multiplied and especially important if participants don’t have other more ‘mainstream’ sports that they enjoy.

One participant, aged 15, attended every Streetsport session at AMT and even managed to gain part-time employment there by cleaning the gym floor which allowed him the ability to pay for his bus fare’s and MMA equipment.

Now sponsored by the gym, AMT has given the teenager the opportunity to channel their energy and motivation into something advantageous for both their fitness and mental well-being.

Many youngsters in Torry, Aberdeen and beyond are the unfortunate victims to home, family or school issues which they unfortunately can’t control.

Sessions like these offer them something different to regular Streetsport session’s and a common takeaway is that these young people thrive in such a thrilling, but crucially entirely safe, environment.

AMT is one of the oldest and longest running Thai boxing gyms in Aberdeen having been established in the early 2000s. Their reputation and honest motives have helped forge a great relationship with Streetsport, a programme which also has a long commitment to the community of Torry.
