Streetsport go global in collaboration with the Dugbatey Foundation in Ghana

Students at Robert Gordon University have travelled to Ghana this month to help fit-out a local school with much-need facilities.

Representing the Dugbatey Foundation, Michael Robertson, Sam Montague and Dugbatey Teye, have been raising money on Gofundme in order to afford 200 desks plus stationary and textbooks to help equip a school in rural Accra, west Africa.

Streetsport, a national award-winning programme run in partnership with the Denis Law Legacy Trust and Robert Gordon University, has also donated a batch of sport bags and Yes Ball Games t-shirts towards the cause.

Streetsport was launched in 2006 to use sport for good and help change young people’s lives, their communities and raise aspirations. Today, Streetsport volunteers support over 18,000 participations annually across Aberdeen taking free of charge sport and creative activities to the doorstep of disadvantaged communities that need it the most.

The desks and other school equipment will benefit as much as 2,000 young people, providing a vital addition to their daily lives.

The two charities have decided to collaborate from a sporting perspective too by competing against each other from across the globe as school children in Aberdeen to go head-to-head with those in Mfadwen, Accra.

The challenges consisted of Top Bins and Keepy-uppy’s, both designed to test the youth’s skill, close-control and technique. Players from both Aberdeen and Accra managed to smash their targets in the bottom and top corners of the goal while Findlay from Hazlehead, Aberdeen, kept the ball up a remarkable 445 times at a Streetsport session in Northfield.

Kai from St Machar managed 245 keepy-ups too while Clark, also from Hazlehead, kept it up 216 times. Some sensational efforts from Scotland!

Mark Williams, COO of the Denis Law Legacy Trust, said: “It was a privilege and delight for Streetsport to be asked to be involved in the campaign and we were more than happy to donate a variety of sports kit to the Dugbatey Foundation in Ghana.

“Using two simple football games was an ingenious idea by the volunteers at both charities and enabled school children to compete and unite from across the globe, a great example of using sport for good.

“Huge credit must go to the Dugbatey Foundation for working tirelessly to reach their fundraising target. By doing so they’ve enhanced the lives of 2,000 school children in Accra, a life-changing achievement and one which they should be very proud of.“
