Streetsport participants row for Sport Relief in RGU’s Row Britannia challenge

Youth participants who attended Streetsport sessions in February have helped Robert Gordon University strive towards their Row Britannia 2020 goal- an inclusive mental health, fitness and well-being challenge for teams throughout the UK to raise vital funds and positive awareness.

Coaches at Streetsport, the Denis Law Legacy Trust’s flagship programme which brings free sport and creative activities to communities in Aberdeen, brought rowing machines from RGU Sport to sessions in Torry, Northfield, Dyce and more for their participants to try out.

Many young people who attend the programme’s sessions lack the opportunity to row at all, whether in the gym or on the water, which made it an excellent experience that not only broadened their horizons to exercise but also their knowledge of the cause.

Row Britannia provides a UK-wide platform, campaign and event that brings together universities, colleges, education and sports governing bodies, British sporting icons and communities.

In addition to raising vital funds, the positive awareness of mental health, fitness and well-being is hugely important and a massive incentive for all those involved.

The rowing machines allowed for the participants to race a variety of different lengths against each other with 500 metre head-to-head races being the preferred method of fierce competition.

Each university or team are challenged to row 2020 miles by mid-March, a substantial target which demands both dedication and teamwork. Youths at Streetsport managed to add 40 miles to RGU’s total which they can be extremely proud of given their lack of age and experience.

Many thanks to RGU Sport for allowing Streetsport the use of the rowing machines, they were of massive benefit to the young participants!

Lastly, you can help them reach their fundraising target by visiting their page on JustGiving here and also contribute to reaching the rowing target in RGU Sport- just row any amount you like and log your distance. Good luck!
