Connec+

The evolution of Project 51, an inclusive session aiming to engage more girls and young women in sport and physical activity.

51% of the UK population are female but when it comes to physical activity, 1.6 million more men than women are playing sport once per week.

Project 51 was a joint enterprise between Sported and Women In Sport, with funding from Comic Relief, created to tackle gender stereotypes with the aim of engaging more girls and young women in sport and physical activity.

Delivered through Streetsport, Denis Law Legacy Trust took an active part in the campaign. Staff and volunteers received interactive workshops to share Women in Sport’s research and insight into the values and motivations that guide women and girls’ decision making. This was then, and continues to be, transferred into Streetsport sessions to both help increase female participation and create a more inclusive environment.

Denis Law Legacy Trust's Young Influencer, Rhiann, received coaching and support from Women in Sport to encourage friends and peers to become more active. She also spoke at a Sported event at Heriot-Watt, presenting on her experiences and what she and others from the Trust had learned throughout the campaign.

The project 51 campaign evolved and provided the inspiration for a Girls Club that was run in conjunction with Active Schools each week at Cruyff Court Denis Law in Aberdeen’s city centre. After gathering participant feedback this soon became Connec+, hosted exclusively by Denis Law Legacy Trust and its Streetsport programme each Wednesday after school, from 16:30-17:30.

Connec+ prides itself on being an open and inclusive space for individuals, such as girls and young women, who may find it hard to engage in sport or other physical activities. There is a high staff to participant ratio which allows for more concentrated attention on individuals as well as a safe, secure environment through using Scotland’s first Cruyff Court.

All young people between the ages of around 8-16 are welcome to attend. If you have any questions around the session, please feel free to email the team at streetsport@rgu.ac.uk.
