Young People Achieve Dynamic Youth Award Through Streetsport

Set up by Youth Scotland, the Dynamic Youth Award encourages young people to set personal targets, complete a minimum of 5 hours of activity and reflect on their achievements.

Kelsey Seivwright, a young Denis Law Legacy Trust volunteer and member of the Granite City Speaks youth forum, successfully led another young person through the Dynamic Youth Award after she herself received the accreditation.

She was inspired after launching her own girls specific Streetsport session at Lochside Academy on Friday lunchtimes, in which she not only wanted to encourage women and girls into sport but also wanted to give them something tangible to achieve.

Murron, a long time Streetsport participant in Torry, has known Kelsey for several years and now attends the session at Lochside Academy. With Kelsey’s support, she led a successful boxing class at the session as part of her Dynamic Youth Award.

Kelsey said “I wanted the Lochside lunchtime session to be a safe space that encouraged girls to take part in sport. I knew Murron from Streetsport and wanted to help her achieve something long lasting that she can use in the future.”

Aimee Culley, Streetsport Operations Coordinator, who runs the session alongside Kelsey added “The original idea was to put Kelsey through the Dynamic Youth Award as part of her placement to gain a qualification, but the more she learnt about the course, she quickly realised that she wanted to do it to put other young people through the award.”

“I have known Kelsey since she was 14 and it is fantastic to see her development, ambition and drive all to help other young people from similar circumstances.”

Kelsey has been active in Streetsport for years; starting out as a participant; then volunteering at sessions and now she has embarked on a yearlong placement with the charity where she is looking forward to putting more young people through the accreditation.

Rhys Jones, Denis Law Legacy Trust Community Coordinator, has supported Kelsey on her placement, focusing on her personal development and skills growth.

He said “Kelsey has taken a leading role in her personal development and has come a long way in the short time we have been working together. It is great to see her drive and determination being used to help others, which is what Kelsey has always wanted to do.”
