Streetsport Girls Session Propels Young Duo to Achieve Youth Award

Two longtime Streetsport participants turned volunteers took part in Youth Scotland’s Dynamic Youth Award (DYA) through Streetsport’s Lochside girls session.

Streetsport volunteers, Kadie Greig and Lily Russo worked towards the award after running a football session with Lochside Academy’s girls Scottish Football Association (SFA) team. The session included a warm up led by the girls, two main drills and a game which ended the session on a high.

The DYA recognises young people who successfully set personal targets, take a leading role in organising activity and reflect on their achievements.

The girls session at Lochside Academy was launched, by longtime Streetsport participant and volunteer Kelsey Seivwright, to encourage women and girls into sport and physical activity. Earlier in the year, Kelsey also led another young person through the award by supporting them in running a boxing session.

As with all Denis Law Legacy Trust and Streetsport activities, the session is free to access with all equipment provided.

Aimee Culley, Streetsport Operations Coordinator, who runs the session alongside Kelsey said “It's been fantastic to see so many of our young female volunteers wanting to achieve their DYA through Kelsey’s girls session.”

“This is exactly what Kelsey wanted to achieve when going through her DYA training and the fact she has managed to put so many of her peers through this award in such a short space of time is a real credit to her and her hard work.”

Kadie said “Kelsey inspired me to take part in this award and the experience has given me more practice in leading a session. It was fun to lead a girls focused session this time as I think it is important for all sports to be inclusive and open to all.”

Lily said “Taking part in the DYA was a good experience and I really enjoyed organising the session. Kelsey has a positive effect on others and I feel really proud to be a part of the girls session at Lochside.”

Kelsey, who has organised and delivered the session at Lochside Academy since its launch in 2023, added “It is great to see so many participants interested in taking part in this award. The girls session has brought so many people together and I am proud that they have achieved something from it that will help them.”

Denis Law Legacy Trust is a registered children’s charity that supports and empowers young people to be confident, capable, independent and responsible citizens within their own communities.

Through Streetsport, which is ran in partnership with Robert Gordon University, the trust delivers free to access sport and creative activity sessions into Aberdeen’s most deprived communities.
