Dons Hero Willie Miller Named Denis Law Legacy Trust Ambassador

We caught up with, the Gothenburg great, Willie Miller on having a Cruyff court named after him, becoming Denis Law Legacy Trust's first ambassador and growing up in the east-end of Glasgow.

Aberdeen FC’s legendary skipper Willie Miller has become the first ever ambassador for Denis Law Legacy Trust.

Miller, the Dons most successful captain, led his team to an iconic victory against Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup final. Speaking about his appointment he said “I was asked if I would consider being an ambassador for the trust so, I was delighted to accept it.

If we can do anything to help any of the three Cruyff courts in Aberdeen then I would only be too happy to do that. I’m very happy to be associated and part of the overall process to try and make some of these areas in Aberdeen better for young people to be brought up in.

To be associated in the same breath as Denis Law and Neale Cooper is fabulous for me but, I think more importantly its about the charity itself, what it does and the foundation that is giving these kids the opportunity to go fill their time and fill their time in a positive manor. I think that’s the real pride in being associated with it.”

The Gothenburg Great holds a special place among Aberdeen football fans. Don’s fans voted Miller as their greatest ever player in a 2003 poll. Earlier this year, it was announced Aberdeen’s third Cruyff court would be named after Miller. He will also appear at the Denis Law Legacy Trust’s prestigious Annual Fundraising Dinner later this November.

Mark Williams, Denis Law Legacy Trust Chief Operations Officer said “We’re honoured to have Willie Miller as an Ambassador for the Denis Law Legacy Trust.

The support for Denis and the charity in making sport and creative activities more accessible for youngsters has been incredible so, it’s great to have a local hero like Willie Miller in a role where we can work together to improve the lives of young people in Aberdeen and beyond.

The charity has grown significantly in the past couple of years, despite challenges like the pandemic so, we’re delighted to have Willie as a key part of the trust moving forward.”

Denis Law Legacy Trust Chairman Alistair Findlater added “we are delighted that Willie Miller, the Gothenburg Great, is the first ambassador for Denis Law Legacy Trust.

With a record 797 appearances for Aberdeen football club and 65 Scotland caps, it is an honour that Willie Miller supports our successful programmes that empower young people of all different ages and backgrounds with positive opportunities.

I’m certain as an ambassador, he will inspire youngsters and potential volunteers in the city to get involved in the Trust’s impactful work.”

Alaina Sinclair a Streetsport coach said “It’s great to have a footballing legend, who guided Aberdeen to Euro glory, to represent the Denis Law Legacy Trust!

It’s amazing that he has taken an interest in helping raise awareness of the free week-nightly sports and creative activity sessions across Aberdeen city.

Best of all, it’s brilliant to have our third Cruyff court named after him!”

Owen Parish, a volunteer for Streetsport, added that “I’ve been going to Streetsport sessions now for many years and the appointment of Willie Miller as ambassador is only going to be a good thing for the charity, raising its profile.

It is nothing but an excellent example for young people to learn from and will definitely encourage many more young people to volunteer for sure.”
